SW_1 Peter 2:9-12 “Evangelism and the Excellencies of God”
Do you remember your first job? How it was a privilege to be hired, how you took on new responsibilities, and how you received a paycheck? Back then, your new “title” preceded your opportunity and responsibility. Like that first job, in our Bible passage this morning, we read about our title and privilege (verse 9) and then the opportunities and responsibilities of that glorious position (verses 10-12).
Our position (verse 9):
• You are the beloved, special, holy and chosen people of God.
• The titles in verse 9 are taken from the Old Testament of a description of
The New Testament believer (, ; )
Our role: “Evangelists of Excellencies”: You know God truthfully and personally.
1. The Excellencies of God: Proclaiming ()
Evangelism is commanded of the church and all believers ()
Evangelism is talking about the beauty of the Lord ()
Evangelism is talking about the transforming grace of Jesus ()
Evangelism reaches into a world with hope, love, joy, and purpose
()
The church: An audience or an army? Seating capacity or sending capacity?
2. The Excellencies of God: Living ()
Our lives must be consistent with our message ()
We are “aliens”: Different from the surrounding culture ()
The solution to the draw of temptation is a more excellent vision
()
We are in the middle of a spiritual battle ()
3. The Excellencies of God: Prevailing ()
We talk about our faith as an overflow of hope and love ()
We talk about our faith knowing that Jesus will return ()
We talk about our faith knowing that it will not always be welcome ()
We talk about our faith, calling people to a response ()
Our obedient response to God, and the response of a heart affected by God, is helping people know the greatest news ever, the gospel news that will change their life. Who do you need to tell? Who should you pray for?
Who can you invite? Use your Top Ten Card to work to this!
